How do I know what I’m allowed to build?

How do I know what I’m allowed to build?

We know navigating the building code can be confusing! For your building peace of mind, we’ve created this checklist to help you sort it all out:

(Also check out this post for additional info)

1. Does your township/municipality have a Zoning Department?

If yes, before you begin designing your building, contact your zoning department to have these questions answered:

  • Is there a limit to the number of auxiliary buildings I’m allowed to have on my property?
  • Is there a restriction on how large my building can be (total square feet)?
  • Is there a restriction on how tall my building can be?
  • How far off my property lines does my building need to be? (Front, Rear, Sides)
  • Could my building be considered agricultural?
  • Are there any other restrictions or guidelines I need to know about?

After you talk to your Zoning Department:

2. Does your county/municipality have a Building Department?
  • If yes, before you begin designing your building, contact your Building Department to have these questions answered:
  • What do I need to do to obtain my building permit? What documents will I need to provide?
  • What is my area’s snow load?
  • Does my building need to register as a contractor in this county/municipality?
  • Are there any other restrictions or guidelines I need to know about?

Once you have these questions answered, we can easily design a building that will meet your local regulations. As always, if you run into questions, don’t hesitate to ask – we are here to help you!
