We know navigating the building code can be confusing! For your building peace of mind, we’ve created this checklist to help you sort it all out:
(Also check out this post for additional info)
1. Does your township/municipality have a Zoning Department?
If yes, before you begin designing your building, contact your zoning department to have these questions answered:
- Is there a limit to the number of auxiliary buildings I’m allowed to have on my property?
- Is there a restriction on how large my building can be (total square feet)?
- Is there a restriction on how tall my building can be?
- How far off my property lines does my building need to be? (Front, Rear, Sides)
- Could my building be considered agricultural?
- Are there any other restrictions or guidelines I need to know about?
After you talk to your Zoning Department:
2. Does your county/municipality have a Building Department?
- If yes, before you begin designing your building, contact your Building Department to have these questions answered:
- What do I need to do to obtain my building permit? What documents will I need to provide?
- What is my area’s snow load?
- Does my building need to register as a contractor in this county/municipality?
- Are there any other restrictions or guidelines I need to know about?
Once you have these questions answered, we can easily design a building that will meet your local regulations. As always, if you run into questions, don’t hesitate to ask – we are here to help you!
