Pole Barns Direct is now offering a new alternative to regular wood posts called Perma-Columns. Perma-Columns are five foot precast concrete columns that keep wood out of the ground. Perma-Columns are the first product to combine the cost efficiency of Post Frame Building with the structural stability of Concrete. Perma-Columns can be coupled with standard posts sizes (4×6 and 6×6) as well as laminated column sizes (3 or 4-Ply 6″ and 3 or 4-Ply 8″).
There are a couple of different options when it comes to setting Perma-Columns. You can either choose to use the Complete Perma-Columns or you can go the route of using Sturdi-Wall Brackets, or Wet-Set Brackets.
The image below illustrates the use of the standard Perma-Columns. The wood column is attached to a “U” shaped steel bracket made of 1/4” steel with 1/2″ thru-bolts and 1/4″ lags. This bracket is robotically welded to steel reinforcement that runs the entire length of the column. (DIAGRAM) The concrete section of the column extends 4 feet into the ground just as a regular post would however the concrete does not decay like a regular post. This creates a permanent foundation for your post frame building. Installation of Perma-Columns is simple. The columns come pre-assembled; no waiting on concrete trucks, and no treated wood in the ground.
Sturdi-Wall brackets are a heavy duty anchor system designed to connect post frame structures to traditional concrete foundations. There are two types of Sturdi-Wall Brackets, the first type is the drill-set model. Drill set installation with Sturdi-Wall brackets is useful in situations where the concrete foundation has already been poured. The tools required are a hammer drill with a masonry bit and concrete fasteners. Below you can see a drill-set bracket being installed on an existing concrete footer and a finished repair on a concrete slab.
The second type of Sturdi-Wall Bracket is the wet-set model. Wet set installation with Sturdi-Wall Brackets provides the highest ultimate strength connection to your foundation and avoids time consuming drilling with a masonry bit, but require being installed while the concrete is still wet. Below you can see a bracket being set into a freshly poured footer as well as a side-by-side view of a wet-set bracket next to a finished install of a bracket.
