Pole Barns Direct is now offering a new alternative to regular wood posts called Perma-Columns. Perma-Columns are five foot precast concrete columns that keep wood out of the ground. Perma-Columns are the first product to combine the cost efficiency of Post Frame Building with the structural stability of Concrete for a permanent foundation that will last longer and won’t rot away. Perma-Columns can be coupled with standard posts sizes (4×6 and 6×6) as well as laminated column sizes (3 or 4-Ply 6″ and 3 or 4-Ply 8″). When working with long post lengths the posts may twist depending on the load. Perma Columns can be coupled with Laminated Columns which are made from multiple pieces of lumber giving the post additional strength that may be required in certain applications. We deliver Perma-Columns all over Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
There are a couple of different options when it comes to setting Perma-Columns. You can either choose to use the Complete Perma-Columns or you can go the route of using Sturdi-Wall Brackets, or Wet-Set Brackets.
The image below illustrates the use of the standard Perma-Columns. The wood column is attached to a “U” shaped steel bracket made of 1/4” steel with 1/2″ thru-bolts and 1/4″ lags. This bracket is robotically welded to steel reinforcement that runs the entire length of the column. (DIAGRAM) The concrete section of the column extends 4 feet into the ground just as a regular post would however the concrete does not decay like a regular post. This creates a permanent foundation for your post frame building. Installation of Perma-Columns is simple. The columns come pre-assembled; no waiting on concrete trucks, and no treated wood in the ground.
Sturdi-Wall brackets are a heavy duty anchor system designed to connect post frame structures to traditional concrete foundations. There are two types of Sturdi-Wall Brackets, the first type is the drill-set model. Drill set installation with Sturdi-Wall brackets is useful in situations where the concrete foundation has already been poured. The tools required are a hammer drill with a masonry bit and concrete fasteners. Below you can see a drill-set bracket being installed on an existing concrete footer and a finished repair on a concrete slab.
The second type of Sturdi-Wall Bracket is the wet-set model. Wet set installation with Sturdi-Wall Brackets provides the highest ultimate strength connection to your foundation and avoids time consuming drilling with a masonry bit, but require being installed while the concrete is still wet. Below you can see a bracket being set into a freshly poured footer as well as a side-by-side view of a wet-set bracket next to a finished install of a bracket.
Sometimes even the highest quality Treated Posts can become victims to the up and down weather near Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. When a wood foundation deteriorates, it compromises the entire structure. This leaves building owners with rotten posts searching for ways to save an otherwise sound building with many useful years left in it. Perma-Column repairs allow these troubled building owners to save their buildings by replacing rotten wood with a concrete foundation. Not only will they address the nagging rot problem, they will also add resale value to their property. You can repair your building by sawing off rotten wood and replacing them with complete Perma-Columns or by replacing them with a wet-set bracket and pouring concrete depending on how much of the post has rotted away.
On average you can expect to pay 2-3 times the cost of a regular treated post depending on what options you had previously chosen to use on your post such as Post Protectors, Concrete or Footer Pads. With that being said you can expect Perma-Columns to be about 30% stronger and remain as a permanent foundation outlasting any and all Treated Posts.
